Ruby

Plenty of UK businesses are running a Ruby on Rails application that has quietly become critical: an internal tool, a booking system, a customer portal built years ago by a developer who has long since moved on. We maintain, modernise and extend those applications from our Southampton studio, and we build new ones where Rails is genuinely the right choice.

Ruby and Rails Services

1. Rescuing Inherited Applications

  • 1
    Codebase audit

A written assessment of what the application does, where the risk sits, and what it would cost to maintain, modernise or replace.

  • 2
    Version upgrades

Moving off end-of-life Ruby and Rails versions, one step at a time, with the test suite kept green throughout.

  • 3
    Dependency and security patching

Outdated gems carry known vulnerabilities. We bring the bundle up to date and keep it there.

2. Maintenance and Feature Work

  • 1
    Ongoing support

Bug fixes, small features and a named developer who understands your codebase, without hiring in-house.

  • 2
    Test coverage

RSpec or Minitest coverage added around the areas that change most, so releases stop being nerve-racking.

  • 3
    Performance tuning

N+1 query elimination, database indexing, caching and background job tuning where response times have crept up.

3. New Rails Builds

  • 1
    Rapid internal tools

Rails remains excellent for admin-heavy, database-backed applications where speed of delivery matters more than raw throughput.

  • 2
    APIs behind modern frontends

Rails in API mode serving a Next.js frontend, giving you a fast public site over a mature backend.

  • 3
    Background processing

Sidekiq and Active Job for imports, emails, reports and scheduled work that should never run in a web request.

4. Modernising Deployment

  • 1
    Containerised releases

Rails applications packaged with Docker so deployments stop depending on one specific server.

  • 2
    Automated pipelines

Tests, linting and migrations run automatically before a release reaches production.

  • 3
    Migration paths

Where Rails is no longer the right fit, we plan a staged move to Next.js or Go rather than a risky rewrite.

How We Quote Ruby Work

Inherited codebases vary enormously, so we start with a paid technical audit before quoting any ongoing work. Larger rebuilds run through our Custom Systems package (from £4,995). If the application is mainly a public-facing website, a rebuild on Authority Site (from £1,995) is often faster and cheaper than maintaining legacy Rails views.

FAQs

Service FAQs

Can you take over a Rails app built by someone else?

Yes, that is most of our Ruby work. We begin with a paid codebase audit that tells you plainly what the application does, where the risk sits and what maintaining, modernising or replacing it would cost. You get that report whether or not you continue with us.

My Rails version is end of life. Is that urgent?

Yes. Unsupported Ruby and Rails versions stop receiving security patches, and outdated gems carry publicly documented vulnerabilities. We upgrade in stages, keeping the test suite passing at each step, rather than attempting one risky jump.

Should I rebuild my Rails app or keep maintaining it?

It depends on what the application actually does. If it is mainly a public-facing website, rebuilding in Next.js is usually faster and cheaper than maintaining legacy Rails views. If it is a genuine business system with complex logic, maintaining and modernising it is almost always the better investment.

Tried to fix some bugs and minor changes to existing code. But it looked too difficult to achieve perfection and decided to re-write the entire site. It was great to work with Rob. He conveyed his views clearly and honest with his opinion and work. Will definitely hire again!

Michael Frentress testimonial
CEO, Easy Internet Now

Our old WordPress site used scraping to check AT&T availability, and checks often timed out. Dream Designs Agency rebuilt Easy Internet Now on Next.js with the official AT&T API, and address checks now finish in under a second. The SEO rebuild improved our rankings, and the custom admin panel shows where customers are searching.
